University renews links with alumni
in the Middle East

On Saturday, 12 April 2014, 90 Richmond alumni, guests and supporters followed the President’s invitation to attend a reception and dinner at The Address Dubai Marina in Dubai. The evening was an opportunity for Richmond alumni in the region to catch up with one another, hear the President, Prof John Annette, as well as Prof Mary Robert, Dean of Learning, Teaching and Curriculum Development, and Prof Wolfgang Deckers (Hon. Fellow 2012), former Professor of International Relations and Political Science, talk about the University, their visit to Dubai and what a pleasure it had been to see so many alumni.

Prof Annette reported on the progress the University had made in recent months. He highlighted areas, such as, the extended range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses now offered, the increase in student enrolment as well as Richmond’s pursuit of its own degree awarding powers.

Prof Annette also encouraged alumni to reach out and support each other as well as the current and future generations of Richmond students who will be following in our their footsteps. He assured attendees that the University was committed to its alumni in the Gulf States and that there would be further activities in support of the local Richmond network in the future. Reflecting on the event and his conversations, Prof Annette commented, “I’m immensely proud and impressed with the careers and accomplishments of our former students in the Gulf. I had the most fascinating conversations and am delighted by the level of warmth and commitment to Richmond with which we’ve been welcomed by our alumni.”

To attend the event, alumni had travelled from near and far across the Gulf States - from Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to name but a few. The spirit of the evening was very much rooted in the special relationship of Richmond alumni with their University and each other. On the night, many old friendships were renewed and new contacts made. In an email to the Richmond team after the event Bariya Ataya (BA Social Sciences 1984) echoed this very sense of connection by stating, “Thank you for a wonderful evening. It was very heart warming to see old friends and teachers. Richmond will always be part of our being. It was fabulous, thank you all for coming out to our part of the world and making it happen.”
