From coast to coast – Richmond alumni gather at University events in the USA

LA event 2014

From 31 May to 5 June 2014, Richmond alumni in the US took the opportunity to attend University events in Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC.

Led by the President and Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof John Annette, the Richmond team were delighted to meet with so many alumni and friends at a formal event in LA and informal alumni gatherings in NYC and Washington DC.

In Los Angeles, Prof Annette took attendees on a journey through the University’s recent successes and latest developments. Alumni heard about the 52% increase in degree seeking students from 2012 to 2013; the successful re-launch of the MBA programme and the overall increase in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes now available to students from all over the world. Prof Annette went on to report on new Language Study and Study Abroad opportunities along with the upgrading of student study and social facilities at both the Richmond and Kensington campuses. “If you would like to get involved in these developments,” Prof Annette concluded his remarks, “there are many ways to do so. Our Student Recruitment team is always grateful for alumni support. If your company can provide a Richmond student with an internship opportunity – let us know; if you feel that your expertise and experience can inspire current Richmond students – let us know; if you would like to make a difference to your local alumni network – please let us know. Most importantly, please stay connected with your University.”

Overall, seventy alumni and guests attended the President's Reception in Los Angeles at Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica on 31 May. After the event, Heibi Pak Kafar (BA Political Science 1990) who attended with her nine-year old daughter Zade, got in touch to say, “Thank you so very much for this wonderful event! It was so very nice to learn how much Richmond has grown. My daughter Zade is now more determined than ever to start Richmond in 2023. I thank you for helping me inspire her. It was an honour and privilege to meet with the President and the other honoured Deans that evening. It was informative and so much fun too. We had the best time.”

The subsequent Richmond gatherings at the Sanctuary Hotel in New York City on 3 June and The W in Washington DC on 5 June were attended by over fifty alumni and guests and provided opportunity for alumni and other supporters to network as well as swap stories about their Richmond experiences through the decades. “It was such a pleasure for me to meet Richmond alumni spanning over four decades – from 1972 to 2014! Every conversation made me appreciate the richness of the impact our alumni have on their chosen fields of expertise, their commitment to the communities they’re part of and their continuing closeness to the University. Talk about an exciting trip!” said Karen Lippoldt, Director of Development and Alumni Relations.
