Update from the President

Dear alumni and friends,

The beginning of the 2016-17 academic year finds the University facing a number of challenges. The first is the challenge of Brexit where we are not sure what the visa and financial status of European students will be by 2019 when it appears that the UK will sadly exit the European Union. The second challenge is the combination of a significant demographic decline in the number of 18 year old American citizens combined with the concerns by parents about the possibility of terrorism even though the UK has been thankfully largely untouched and the threat of violence, especially gun crime, is insignificant compared to other parts of the world. The third challenge is the growing competition of universities around the world to recruit international students.

It is in this context that we will be asking alumni to assist us in recruiting students for the University and asking you to provide your insights as to what makes the ‘Richmond Experience’ so special. We are also asking alumni to consider contributing to the University scholarship fund either generally or for students from a specific country or region.

I really enjoyed the alumni events we held on campus in August for the graduates of the 70s, 80s and 90s. It was fun and I hope it provided a meaningful experience for the alumni and their families who attended. We are truly an international community and in this time of growing nationalism, our internationalism exemplified by our motto ‘unity in diversity’ has become even more important.

Best Wishes, John Annette, President
